FOOTBALL: Chelsea sign German wonderkid Kai Havertz for £90m

Germany international Kai Havertz has penned a 5-year contract (until June 2025) at Stamford Bridge, becoming the sixth newest Chelsea major signing after players: Ben Chilwell, Malang Sarr, Thiago Silva, Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech…new additions to Frank Lampard’s squad.

The 21-year old wonderkid was signed from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth £90m (£70m plus add-ons), making Kai Havertz the most expensive German player of all time. The move also makes him the joint most expensive player ever signed by a British club (along with Paul Pogba who joined Manchester United in 2016).

“I am very happy and proud to be here,” Havertz told Chelsea’s official website. “For me it is a dream come true to play in a big club like Chelsea and I can’t wait to meet all the players and the trainers”.

Chelsea beat off competition from several top European clubs in landing the German playmaker, the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich were all interested in signing Kai.
