France Football has announced there will no Ballon d’Or winner for this year 2020 due to the “exceptional circumstances” the Covid-19 pandemic has had on the season. This decision turn a number of players into victims.
The likes of Robert Lewandowski, Karim Benzema, Sergio Ramos, Kevin De Bruyne…the Ballon d’Or postponement feels unfair. These players as well as top contenders Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo had a superb 2019/20 season. The six players listed above are all still in the Champions league with their clubs.
The 6 players that would have been in contention for Ballon d’Or 2020.
• Lewandowski: the player most-impacted with France Football’s decision to cancel this year Ballon d’Or. Lewy has been on top form this year, winning the Bundesliga trophy with Bayern, the DFB Pokal, picking up the league golden boot with 34 goals. The striker can still help Bayern attain Champions league glory.
• Benzema: This season is one of the striker’s best…scoring 21 La Liga goals and a key factor in Real Madrid winning the league.
• Ramos: Another major key factor in Real Madrid’s La Liga trophy. Sergio Ramos has helped Los blancos with his defensive and leadership skills, as well as penalties. 11 successive matches without defeat since football restart, thanks to Sergio Ramos and Karim Benzema.
• Messi: 2020 not been so good for Leo as Barcelona lost the league to Real Madrid. Nevertheless, another phenomenal season for Lionel Messi, 25 La Liga goals earned him his 7th Pichichi award. Messi also registered 21 assists this season. Leo’s focus now is on the Champions league.
• Ronaldo: Portuguese striker, Cristiano Ronaldo had a poor star to the year for Juventus but has since then discovered his goalsoring form, currently on 28 goals this season and can still score more.
• De Bruyne: The Belgian midfielder is on course to win EPL player of the Year. 18 assists this season and one of the best passers currently in the world. Pep’s team depends on him for creativity.
