POETRY: Friday Line 48: GROANING DEMOCRACY

Presents
Poetry Friday Line 48: GROANING DEMOCRACY
GROANING DEMOCRACY
I woke up to see the light of today
Shining and brightening everywhere
It reminds me of our heroes past
Who sacrificed all that could give them happiness.
The story of these soon forgotten giants
Keeps giving me a slapping wake-up each morning
Even the cry for their gone too soon glory
Keeps me shaking daily
The unrealistic liberty of the once saved slaves
And the never granted freedom of the once librated nation
Which keep rolling on the shoulders of some selfish Monkers
Keeps hitting me for my dumbness
The ever preached but never practiced gospel of Justice
Keeps provoking my human person
And even the uneven distribution of our harvest
Keeps my heart beating furiously
Our democracy too has become so choosy
Selecting those he favours and those he lays judgement on
Becoming only a rememberance of the misfortunes of the unfortunates
Leaving us with the “man die go woman born another” slogan
Generations come and go
So too the same culture lives on
Those that should voice out submit to materiality
Putting to shame the struggles of our fathers
But the flagging of the green and white
Gives hope of the rising again of the sun
The restoration of the lost dignity
And the making of a patriotic representatives.
– Ikise Atabang
(Happy Democracy day from the platform of Poetry Friday. We celebrate and honour those who fought for the peace we are enjoying today.)
THE UNEXPECTED VISITOR
I came as a friend to stay
But not to live
Men took me for a joke
I struck!
The world powers thought they were strong
But I was stronger
The streets flooded with my rumors
Not knowing I was ready to stay
The liquid metals
Ready to run to their welders
But no response
Could I be that strong?
Wisdom rendered senseless
Theory became useless
Laws were backfiring
Could I be that strong?
The voice of Mecca shouted by me
The Easter Bunnies went to sleep
Christ left on the cross alone
The fasting stomachs were now filled
Praises to me!
Great economies down to not
Oh me!
Could I be that strong.
The men of the stars
Looked  up to their stars
The servants of the cross
Looked up to the cross
The poor
The poorest
The poorest of the  poor
Being turned to ribs by hunger
The trending man
Took the pride
The drug men  sweating in their own shrines
The trending man prevailed
The world  was without hope
Her seeds down the soil
Never to germinate again
Could I be that strong?
– Isaiah Oduobuk
